Our Story

My name is Arjun Ganatra. I am the founder of SEA Project (Students for Environmental Action). I have always loved the sea and the water. As a kid, I used to go surfing and boogie boarding for hours on end with no end in sight. The irony is that I’m also scared of the ocean because of sharks and fish. When I surf, I block out all my fears and distractions and enter a kind of serene mindset. This is a big part of me, and is a love and passion for many kids my age. Microplastics are invading the ocean and disrupting the serenity of these ocean-based activities. Fish and marine life digest these microplastics, which are then eaten by us. I created SEA Project to fight environmental misfortunes, starting with the ocean and microplastics. I am also a daily disposable contact lens wearer, and I understand the need for a solution. I have used contact lenses for over 2 years, and each time I throw them away in the trash or into the toilet. I began asking myself where these contact lenses and their packaging end up. I found that about 20% of all contacts worldwide, or about 7.5 billion contact lenses, are flushed down the toilet or into the sink every year. I then found out about TerraCycle and its partnership with Bausch + Lomb to recycle contact lenses and their packaging. The environment faces many challenges, but we can only address climate change by taking one step at a time. As Mahatma Gandhi said, “Peace is a journey of a thousand miles and it must be taken one step at a time.”
